about

It takes an hour to write some songs. This one took me ten years. I wrote the melody, the chords, and the lyrics to the chorus back in 2001 after graduating high school. I didn't have the best high school experience and could not wait to go to college and re-create myself. As the years went on, I encountered many many many situations that I'd rather just cut out of my life and completely forget about, but it's really not that easy. I kept running into people from my "former lives", found those distant memories occupying my headspace just when I thought I was starting to forget. This song is about learning the hard way that you can't run from the past - you have to face it eventually.

lyrics

My skin's never been this thick before
The callous covers every pore
Nothing cuts me to the core, it's bleak here
I am getting hard to recognize
This is more than simply shy
And it's no temporary guise - it's deeper
Break me open wide

I thought I got away

And then I see that face again
The fires of hell lick me from within
The sound of teeth on rusty tin, getting louder
I was a captive to your touch
The need to forgive you, not so much
I can still taste your sucker punch, it's so sour
It broke me open wide

I thought I got away

Ran as fast as I could
I went farther than I thought I should
Across oceans, through valleys, up mountains, down alleys to think that I'm safe and sound
But when I turn around you stare back at me

I thought I got away
